However, we are more concerned about how your sleeping environment affects your sleep or lack thereof.

For starters, the bedroom is the place where you should always go to sleep. While a relaxing afternoon nap on the daybed in the living room might be all right, you should always make it a habit to head over to your bedroom at the end of a long day. This will help you associate that particular part of your house with sleep and will thus make you feel sleepy automatically.

But even this technique won’t work if your bedroom resembles an office. For instance, if you have a cluttered desk loaded with office work, papers or even that novel you’re working on, your attention can slowly wander to the desk and cause you to dwell on things that are far, far away from sleep. This is why you need to have a separate working environment set up in a different room well away from your bedroom.

Even the paint colours on your bedroom can have an effect on your sleep. If you have painted your walls with bright colours like lime green or yellow, it’s not much of a surprise to find yourself wide awake for the bigger part of the night. Therefore, for starters, paint your walls in a calm and smoothing colour. Pale blue is an excellent choice as it has the ability to calm your nerves.

The way you place the furniture in your room also affects the way you sleep. You really wouldn’t want to clutter a small room with a massive bed and equally large pieces of furniture everywhere. What you need to do is to select furniture with the size of your bedroom as well as your comfort in mind. Keeping the bedside lamp switches close to the bed and selecting diffused light for bedtime reading is a good idea. In addition, make sure to hang curtains that are able to block the light and create a cosy environment in your room. If you feel like going feng shui, you can always place a fish tank at a corner so that you can see it as you lie in bed.

Last but most certainly not least, purchase a comfortable mattress for your bed so that you don’t have to worry about aching limbs or bad backs every morning.
